Chinese province to invest $3.2bn in water diversion project

The provincial government of Shandong in China will provide CNY20.6bn ($3.2bn) for the construction of the eastern route of the South-North Water Diversion (SNWD) project over the next two years.
The money will be used to build 11 water projects along or near the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, which passes Shandong.
The project consists of three routes - eastern, middle and western - and will bring water to the drought-stricken areas of Shandong and Tianjin.
The project will be completed in 2013.
To date, Shandong has made a total investment of CNY12.5bn for the construction of the SNWD project's eastern route.
